College Application Process

Laptop and Phone

The college application process can be very overwhelming, with all of the essays and the letters of recommendation. Starting early can help make the process a lot easier.  It is important to submit your application within the school’s deadline.  Few colleges will accept your application after the registration deadline.

Colleges usually have four different types of college application deadlines and it is important to understand which one applies to you:

Regular Decision Deadlines – This is the most common registration deadline.  Regular decision college application deadlines are usually in January and you have until the end of April to be accepted. College Decision Day is May 1st.  There is no limit to the number of schools you can apply to if you apply by the regular decision deadline. You are also not obligated to enroll in any particular school.

Early Decision – Early decision deadlines are usually in November which is a great option for applicants that are interested in only ONE particular college.  It is not advisable to apply early if you are not certain about the school you are applying to. When you are accepted, after applying through an early decision deadline, you cannot break your contract.  The college obligates you to attend and most colleges will charge you a steep fine.

Early Action Deadlines - Early action deadline is usually in November which is a great option for applicants that are interested in applying to MULTIPLE colleges. Applying by the early action deadline allows you to send in your application early but it is not binding. You may apply to multiple schools and get an early response from the school.

Rolling Admission Deadlines – Rolling admissions deadline is the same time as regular registration – January.  The difference is that colleges offering rolling admissions look at applications immediately and send out letters as soon as they have made a decision.
